Aqiqah is the Sunnah practice of sacrificing an animal to express gratitude to Allah for the birth of a child — traditionally two animals (commonly sheep or goats) for a boy and one for a girl, based on hadith in Sunan Abi Dawood and Sunan an-Nasa’i. It is most commonly performed on the seventh day after birth, though it can be done later if needed. The Aqiqah day traditionally bundles together three Sunnah acts: formally naming the child, shaving the baby’s head (with the weight of the hair in silver given as charity), and offering the Aqiqah sacrifice itself, with the meat distributed to family, friends, and those in need — making it both a spiritual and communal celebration of new life.
